Asthma

In Chinese medicine asthma is not seen as being due to the lungs alone. Correct breathing involves the many other muscle groups and organ systems. In particular TCM places the emphasis on the lungs and kidneys with the kidney energy being responsible for the in-breath and the lung energy for the in-breath. The disruption of normal breathing seen in asthma is described as being due to the disconnection of the lungs and kidneys and treatment usually involves strengthening and reconnecting lungs and kidneys. Other factors can include the presence of phlegm and in this regard dietary changes are advisable, particular the avoidance of dairy products which are often the key, particularly in children. If there is a pattern of recurrent colds followed by breathing difficulties then attention needs to be paid to the immune system and if there has been a history of antibiotic use then a course of probiotics is often helpful.
